Exploring Texture in Design: The Key to Creating Authenticity

Have you ever looked at a design and felt like you could “touch” its surface? A wood photo with a prominent grain, a glossy marble wallpaper, or a poster with a rough fabric pattern? That’s the power of texture – it can make designs more realistic, deeper, and engaging.

In the world of design, Texture is not only a decorative element but also plays an important role in conveying emotions and creating strong visual impressions. So what is Texture, what types are there and how is it applied in design fields? Let's explore with SaDesign in this article!

1. Some basic information about Texture

Texture is a term used to describe the feel of the surface of an object or material. It is often used in fields such as fashion, art, interior design, architecture and photography to describe and create effects on products.

Texture can be created in many different ways. Including blending different materials, polishing. Or using texturing techniques to create a different and unique surface. The variety of textures provides designers, artists and decorators with a lot of opportunities. To be creative and express their ideas on their products.

2. Popular Texture Types in Design

2.1. Tactile Texture

Tactile means to touch. Tactile texture is a rough (3D) texture to a surface that can be felt when touched. This is a very important element that is considered more in 3D design than in 2D. Real surface texture needs to be felt, or seen by letting light shine on its surface. Artists often take advantage of this to make their painting surfaces look more alive. Layers of paint can be built up to create rough peaks, a technique called Impasto.

2.2. Visual Texture

Visual texture is the visual impression that texture gives to the viewer, for example, color, trend, and density in a photo. It is also the impression of texture created by the artist by trying to reproduce the color and value of real textures. The nature of visual texture will be related to the illusion of surface texture. No matter how rough the object is, the surface of the photo is still very smooth. And this type of texture is mainly used in 2D techniques. The role of texture in design

2.3. Pattern Texture

Pattern is understood as a type of motif in which geometric elements, symbols, drawings will be repeated many times. Basically, Pattern appears when one or more objects repeat themselves and fill a surface in a structure. This repetition can be continuous or discontinuous, the effect of the pattern varies depending on which symbols are used and how they are repeated.

Patterns are trendy in design right now, but technically they have been around for a long time. Patterns are also widely used in architecture, art, and fashion. By filling a surface with objects that repeat in a regular manner, the human brain is intrigued and attracted to it.

2.4. Organic Texture

Organic is a very familiar phrase in food and lifestyle. However, this term is also applied in another field, which is architectural and interior design, and has become a creative art style that many architects have tried.

Organic style or Organic Design is defined as the unity between man and nature. It is the harmony between location, structure, architecture, interior decoration with the natural environment to form a unified whole.

Nowadays, Organic Design is not only popular in European countries but also spread to Asian countries. This is demonstrated through the works and interior spaces following this style.

Texture not only makes the design more beautiful but also creates emotions and connections with the viewer. No matter what field you work in - graphics, interior, fashion or UI/UX - understanding and using Texture properly will help you create more impressive and professional products.
